Inspiration Through Images (or Where Dani Finds Her Inspiration…)

Wading Through Life...

We all need a little inspiration sometimes, right? man in jeans taking off belt OK, that works too! **wink** But right now I am needing some inspirational focus for Book 2 in the Secrets of Thornbury Woods series (Psst: Title Coming Soon!). Visual images help the ideas flow little faster. Here are some visuals that are really inspiring me for this book.   Or maybe these?   What ideas do these images bring to your mind? Do they inspire a story in you?

Books, Breaks, and a Sale!

How often do you take rest breaks? True rest breaks? I’ll admit, many times I push myself to the limit, then collapse for days (okay, sometimes its weeks of doing the bare minimum before I recover). That’s, um, not good! Cover of book 18 Minutes I’m reading a book called 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction, and Get the Right Things Done by Peter Bregman. He proposes that breaks should be more of a “ritual of self-imposed brief and strategic interruptions.” This is a concept that I almost can’t wrap my head around! He calls them regular rest stops. I understand in theory, but I’m not sure how “I” would do it. How do I not push from one project to the next while I still have momentum? Or do I run out of momentum because I push myself too hard? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! I’m honestly baffled about how to get some momentum with Secrets of Thornbury Woods Book 2. I love the idea and characters, but I’m having trouble finding my rhythm (wink) with the edits. Never fear. My author friends are encouraging me with sprints and ideas—and hopefully I’ll step into the flow soon. We’ve even started brainstorming Book 3!! I’m very excited about that. Let me know how your summer is going. How are you creating breaks in the summer heat?

New Release News! And a Sale!

Wading Through Life:

The gothics are coming! I did it!   This past weekend, I finished the first draft of book two of my contemporary southern gothic series. This series dream was born 3 years ago, and I’ve fought to bring them to life through a difficult job, writers block, home renovation, pandemic, and a job change… and the doubts, lordie, the doubts!   Trying to figure out how to make the move to this genre was intimidating, even after 10 years of publishing, but this is the genre of my heart and I had to do it! The fact that I’ve finished drafts for books one and two in the last year seems like a miracle but I’ve just pushed for one word at a time. Now it’s time to revise! image There are quite a few things to come before the books can be released. Besides revisions, I’ll work with a cover artist to get that ready. See below for some theme ideas. I promise to release titles and covers to my newsletter first!!   Then uploading files to various retailers to prep for launch of book one *in May*. I’ll start the process all over again immediately because I want to release book two in *July*.   Are these books for you? Well, I hope so, but a big clue would be if you are a fan of secret passages, old houses, mysterious heroes, and secret societies. These books are patterned after the stories I devoured in the library as a young girl by authors like Phyllis A Whitney and Barbara Michaels. Mine have a contemporary setting steeped in the atmospheric surroundings of the southern US.   image I hope you’ll join me on the journey to publishing the stories of my heart and share in my excitement!!! Take care, Dani image

Accountability: Hand-in-Hand to Meet Your Goals

Wading Through Life...

As the song says, life can be hard sometimes. Doing things is hard sometimes. Believe it or not, even words are hard sometimes. Many of us start out the new year wanting (sometimes desperately) to make changes in our lives. Myself included! But change is hard. This past November, I found a key that helped me accomplish a goal. It still wasn’t easy, but it was easier. I went from not writing at all to getting in several writing sprints per day. The key? Accountability. I asked a few fellow authors who were participating in the same monthly challenge as me if they wanted to start a small accountability group. Just post your goals and chick in daily. That’s all. We would hold each other accountable to work towards our goals, offer encouragement, celebrate our wins, and help find solutions to struggles. Closeup of diverse group of people making fists in a circle to express unity, support and solidarity. Hands of multiracial community greeting with fist bump in a huddle. Society joining together for collaboration and equality. Guess what? It worked! And so did I!! After all, I’d be horribly embarrassed if I failed completely. That got me through the first few days. Then I was encouraged by the response and progress of my fellow authors. The writing got easier (most days), and I found myself looking forward to posting my progress each day. I mean, I wasn’t perfect. I didn’t write every single day, because…life. Right? But in just 30 days, I got a hell of a lot more done than in the previous 6 months. December came. The challenge ended. I stopped posting and—bam! No more words. Suddenly all the other stuff on my plate became more important, more urgent, more—well—noticeable if it wasn’t done. More noticeable than the writing. But I have a book I want to finish. Editing to accomplish. I have a series I want to publish this year. I could struggle alone, or ask for some accountability! So a small group of authors are joining me this year to Get Some Shit Done! I believe this is part of creating good goals that can actually come to fruition. Most people have this idea that they have to do it all themselves. I don’t know why we feel this way. All work is easier if you have a helping hand.   An open planner in the forefront and cats laying on the bed in the background. Look at the obstacles and put a system in place that will help you take the steps. It will be so much easier! Whether its an exercise partner, or an in-person class to learn the thing you’ve been trying alone for the longest time, or a weekly meeting to give your family a time and place to decide on meals for the week. What are your goals for this year? Do you have a plan to accomplish them? I'd love to hear from you! Dani

It Caught My Eye...

I've had stairs on my mind lately. A stairwell plays a prominent place in my current work-in-progress (WIP) as the location of a very tragic event, an event that the heroine is reminded of every time she has to pass or use this staircase in the house. It makes the home a very emotional place for her. What should be a beautiful centerpiece as you enter a home is transformed into a reminder of grief and tragedy.   A curved staircase in a foyer

Wading Through Life

Author Joanna Penn talks about the different types of energy authors use – “starting energy”, “pushing through energy”, and “finishing energy”.** This final one is the push to get a project completed, to see that story through to the very end. Usually it is fueled by the momentum that has built up during your project and the rush to see your story wrap up. I’m full tilt in finishing energy right now, and its both satisfying and exhausting. Normally I find it exciting to push to the end of a story, but my current energy is also muddled by everything else going on in my life. Finishing up at my old job... That meant (for me) wrapping up any outstanding tasks, trying to proactively cover anything that might come up while there’s no one there to do my job, leave instructions behind, and clean out my office (on top of the emotional energy of closing out this chapter of my life). And now learning my new job. Yes, my expectations of myself are a little high… But I’m trying to focus o the joy of setting all of that chaos aside for a few hours so I can explore this adventure with my characters. Not easy, but oh so fun! What story are you enjoying to escape your work load today? Take Care, Dani ** More on different energies in the book writing process from Joanna here: https://www.thecreativepenn.com/starting-but-not-finishing-writing-projects/

Not So Typical Gifts of Love–From a Romance Author

It’s the month of love! **cue cheesy romantic cliches** I’ll admit—I’m not a typical romance author. I’m not into the usual “romantic” gestures--rom coms, roses or wanting my lover to make an over-the-top gesture. I’m a weird, focused-on-the-small-things kinda girl with a dark side who writes contemporary gothic romances set in the South. My husband and I have odd senses of humor. So while I wouldn’t turn away a bouquet of roses, that’s not something I’d get really excited about. For other quirky girls like me, I thought I’d share a list of gifts that would make me squeal… well, not out loud, but certainly in my head!
  • Theater movie night with the newest horror movie release (or even an old one at home on Shudder or Netflix)**
  • Candles (any and all kinds)
  • Pens and a journal (I know, right??)
  • Gothic planner stickers (love the ones I got for Christmas!)
  • Cat toys (we have 7 cats)
  • Anything about the movie “It”  (original or remake!)
  • A Ghost Adventures marathon (love it!)
  • Bones Coffee (spooky and delicious, with no sugar)
  • A night around a fire in the firepit under a full moon
  • A weekend away to a haunted hotel or historic castle (I wish!)
  • A ghost walk
  • Piper & Ivy T-shirts (coolest reader T-shirts in the world and the images don't crack!)
  • A hot bath, a meal I didn’t cook, and a thorough massage (okay, some of me is typical!)
Bones Coffee packages   What would be the unusual gift that would have you jumping for joy? Comment at the bottom of this page for a chance to win your own goodies! I'll send you a package of bones coffee (various flavors) and a cute notebook! (winners chosen 2/13/22-please check back for winner names and instructions for claiming your prize)   Take care! New Year…New Planner Supplies!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I’m a Planner Girl! I have a 3-drawer set of planner supplies and put together weekly spreads pretty regularly. It helps me stay on track and, frankly, clears out the cobwebs. Many years ago, I learned to do what I call a brain dump. If I pour everything out onto a To Do list (appointments, chores, projects, etc), then I no longer have to use a lot of brain power to keep track of those things. I’ve fine-tuned this to a monthly and weekly calendar setup so my To Dos don’t outdistance my time (mostly…). And now I’ve become addicted to planning every week, usually on Sunday afternoons. Which means…an excuse to use stickers!  😊 Just kidding. Not! Planner Spread For my fellow planner girls or those who want to get started, here’s a list of some of my favorite tools, along with some of my daughter’s also (because I managed to pass this one gene along!).
  • Passion Planner is the actual planner I use (monthly and weekly spreads-I prefer undated-with monthly and yearly reflection questions), but there are a lot of different ones out there. Passion Planner also posts content on Instagram and YouTube. I enjoy watching their ideas for different ways to use their planners.
  • Archer & Olive is really good for those who like to do bullet journals. This is my daughter’s preferred option (and you can see some of her spreads on her blog here-alittlebithappierblog.com). These journals have high quality bindings and paper that doesn’t bleed, which can be a big deal when you are creating your own spreads.
  • The HB90 planner by Sarah Cannon is available on Etsy and is wonderful for all the authors out there! I bought the download and use some of the ideas to incorporate into my own planner. I also print word count charts and some decision-making tools she has to help me keep my planner useful for author needs. She has an awesome HB90 class and you can also watch planner videos on her Heart Breathings YouTube channel.
  • My sister, author Ella Sheridan, and I are working through the Heal the Way You Work class (based on the Do Less book by Kate Northrup). This teaches you how to plan your schedule based on your energies of that day/week/month. A very different approach, but I’m finding it very interesting. Fingers crossed I can figure this out, but her checklists of questions for creating annual/quarterly/weekly schedules is super helpful for clarifying goals and focuses.
  • Stickers!!! I love and use a lot of Happy Planner sticker books. I especially like all the quotes and encouraging sayings in them. I was gifted some gothic ones for Christmas from HoundsflyteDesigns on Etsy that I’m loving! My daughter and I immediately went to her store and bought more of them.
Sticker books
  • Pens, pens, and more pens… I have a lot of these but not as many as some planners. I’m very picky about mine… My favorite black pens are uni-ball signo, whether I’m writing or planning. I also have a set of Pentel EnerGel colored pens that work well. My daughter likes Muji gel pens in 0.58 and Tombow duel brush pens.
  • But planning is always a good excuse for a STAPLES TRIP! I collect all kinds of Post It notes, page tabs, and washi tape. Writers love all kinds of office supplies, but I mean, who wouldn’t?!?!
I’d love to hear about your favorite planner supplies or planner channels to watch! Take care! I hope your year is off to a great start! Dani

A Cool Breeze of Inspiration

"Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall." - F. Scott Fitzgerald   Fall has always been a season of beginnings for me. Weird, I know, but its traditionally a time when I re-evaluate or begin plans anew. Maybe it’s a holdover from school, when autumn was time to buy new supplies and adopt new schedules. Or maybe its that the relief from the brutal southern heat as summer ends gives me a renewed sense of energy. (I’m never high energy anyway, so I have to take what I can get.) Basket of fresh picked apples with saying Judge each day not by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant. A genuinely cool breeze. Tidying up the yard. Hiking. This is even when I get the urge to clean out my closets (no spring cleaning for me! That’s when I’m out in the flower beds.) So I was also excited to start this month with Romance Author Mastermind, a conference for established romance authors. Most conferences I find a few things that inspire me, but most of it is about connecting with readers. At RAM, the ideas for leveling up your author career are like drinking from a fire hydrant. Massive amounts of inspiration, A little bit of overwhelm, and a lot of imposter syndrome (for me). As an author with a day job, I have to be careful what I pick and choose to work on. But pairing up with this feeling of fall, and the start of a new year, I can look at the ideas with more motivation,. It’s really helpful that they encourage us to just pick a few things to start with, a few things to work on and implement, not the whole shebang. Winter is a time that’s perfect for writing, hibernating underneath a fuzzy blanket while the scenes play out in my head. For me, the next year’s goal will be consistency. Regardless of what’s happening in other areas of my other journey, it will help my motivation if I can maintain consistency. The story will flow better if I can consistently hold the images in my head no matter what else is going on. Hopefully that means you’ll be hearing from me more often!! Take Care, Dani Dark Destiny book cover with young woman in front of abandoned hospital with title and woman standing in front of an abandoned hospital.   Discover more secrets from Covington Corner: She knew something incredible waited in the shadows of the abandoned mental institution, but she never imagined it would lead to love.
